Does Paula Deen Deserve to be Sacked?

On Friday, The Food Network announced that they had decided not to renew Paula Deen’s contract at the end of this month. And it was rumored that her deal with QVC was on the rocks.  However, is Paula Deen being sacked too soon?

Let’s remember that she wasn’t “caught” using the “n” word in recent casual conversation over lunch with the girls last week. She was honest and admitted to spewing racist remarks on her own. She could have lied, like most people would do. While she did admit to using racial slurs years ago, she’s also a white person who grew up in the deep South, where in her youth (1950’s and 60’s), ignorance and racism ran deep.  Don’t know what I’m talking about? Watch “The Help” (dummies guide to Southern racism).

I’m not defending her past actions, but if someone behaved like the biggest ignoramus the world has ever seen a few years back, does that mean that person is incapable of growth or perception change? Look at how much our awareness as an American culture has grown over the last few decades, from the 60’s (when Deen was in her teens/early 20’s) to the 80’s – and look how much we have evolved from the 80’s to the present.

Nobody (including Paula Deen) is excusing her past behavior, but could it be possible that Deen’s perspective on racial discrimination could have changed over the last 20 years?

Paula Deen On Racist Slurs and Law Suit

As a fan of Paula Deen, it's disheartening to learn about her latest scandal. The "N" word should never be used by anyone, in any context. Even if you're in the privacy of your own home. That word symbolizes hate and ugliness and it has no place in the modern English language.

However, it still remains to be proven whether or not Deen is guilty of the charges that have been brought against her and her brother, Earl “Bubba” Hiers, in the law suit files by former Paula Deen Enterprises employee Lisa Jackson. Jackson alleges several instances of sexual and racial workplace discrimination.

Apparently, the pressure and humiliation got the best of Paula Deen. According to Eater.com, Deen snubbed a scheduled appearance on The Today Show. But she did release a 48 second apology, addressing her mistakes and the scandal. Was this a heart-felt apology? I'll let you be the judge.

Top Chef All Stars Episode 11 Sneak Peek: Paired Up

Food Network super star, Paula Deen.
Y’all ready for a little Top Chef preview? The Food Network’s Paula Deen pays a visit to the Top Chefs as guest judge on this week’s Top Chef All Stars episode 11 (Paired Up) and Carla Hall is majorly star struck!

Top Chef Quickfire
This week’s Quickfire has the chefs running around like their tails (asses) are on fire as they whip up dishes aimed to impress Paula Deen. And the prize for this week’s Quickfire is $5,000 (again).
  • Dale Talde says Paula Deen is just so night and day from his flavor spectrum. He works in a Chinese restaurant for Christ’s sake. He whips up raw oysters wrapped in beef and thinks his dish is worth $5,000. Even though he won $30,000 in the last challenge, he wants the cash from this challenge because he’s a greedy American (his words – not mine).
  • Antonia Lafaso says she friends food more than she should – is there a limit? She’s making a fried shrimp salad.
  • Mike Isabella makes Fried Chicken Oysters (yummy).
  • Richard Blais whips out the liquid nitrogen (again) to make fried mayonnaise balls (flavored with coffee and lime). Yes people, the Blais has added a whole new dimension to fatty foods.

Marcel Vigneron "helps" Tiffany Derry cook for the people.
Top Chef Elimination Challenge
Angelo Sosa, Fabio Viviani, Spike Mendelshon, Tre Wilcox, Tiffani Faison and Marcel Vigneron return to assist the remaining chefs in the Elimination Challenge… And Dale Talde could not be more disappointed – McNasty Nancy #1 bitches, bitches, bitches all about Top Chef Kitchen… Can someone staple Dale’s lips together please?
  • The chefs need to prepare 320 orders?
  • The Richard/Fabio and Angelo/Mike Isabella bromances are reignited (sorta).
  • Marcel wears on Tiffany Derry’s last nerve as he tries to help her cook food for the people. Marcel, let the shrimp heads go already! Dale thinks that if anyone can get Marcel in check, it’s Tiffany.
  • Mike Isabella is heckling the other chefs more than usual and grating on Richard’s nerves. Mike is paired with Tiffani Faison and it looks like she may be doing most of the work.
  • Antonia is having a great time cooking with Spike.
Can't wait for this week's episode of Top Chef. It might just make up for last week's departure of fan-fave, Angelo Sosa. I'm still a little teary...

India + Sushi = True Love Forever? Evidence of the World-Wide Culinary Evolution

No, hell is not freezing over. But the rumor is true: India has adopted Sushi as the new food craze. Raw-fished sushi is a rising trend in a land where the concept of raw fish consumption would top the tales of terror.

Sushi is just starting to become more widely available in urban areas across India. And while the USDA estimates up to 42% of the Indian population is vegetarian and would never be open to eating sashimi (raw fish), that still leaves the meat-eaters in majority and clearly their palettes are evolving. There are also certain styles of sushi that the sushi-loving-Indian is gravitating towards, such as Norimaki (raw fish wrapped in rice wrapped in seaweed).

Most recently, sushi has attracted spot-light attention with upscale Japanese restaurants opening in India’s major cities. Megu is adding New Delhi and Mumbai to its roster of global locations. And just this past November, Nobu Matsuhisa, the renowned chef proprietor of the Nobu and Matsuhisa restaurants, flew out a team of 26 chefs, managers and service staff from London, plus all the equipment needed, to convert a Mumbai restaurant into a Nobu dining experience (a sit-down dinner at Nobu ranges from $600 to $1,200 per head). While Food Network’s Iron Chef, Masaharu Morimoto, has already established his Japanese restaurant, Wasabi, at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai, which has received critical acclaim. Some of the other well-known restaurants with sushi bars in India include “Three Sixty” at the Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi, “Harajuku” in the O Hotel in Pune, and “Tetsuma” in Mumbai.

This is just another example of how the culinary evolution is spreading across the world at light-speed. If India can embrace the Sushi Revolution, imagine all of the possibilities that behold the future of the human civilization as a whole...

I can’t wait.

Kahlúa® Partners with Food Network Star, Aarón Sánchez, to Launch a Bad Branding Campaign

I’m bemused over the Kahlúa®/Aarón Sánchez press release I read this morning. Maybe the Kahlúa marketing team threw the campaign together at 3am New Year’s morning, after too many Kahlúa shots? They’re doing a terrible job masquerading their “Delicioso Night In” marketing campaign as an intro to a fabricated Mexican tradition. I’m all for trying out new trends, but the last time I checked, the residents of Mexico – specifically Veracruz – didn’t have a tradition of inviting family, friends and co-workers over for Kahlúa® once a month. In fact, I’m fairly sure that entertaining company in one’s home in Mexico isn’t saved for special occasions, but practiced regularly as a way of life – no?

Moreover, Kahlúa® is referring to their “Delicioso Night In” campaign as a “movement”. Aside from suggesting that consumers invite friends over one night a month (which most of us do anyway), there isn’t anything I can find that would brand their campaign a “movement”. I can understand the “equal rights movement” or the “anti-slavery movement”, but the “share a bottle of Kahlúa with friends movement” just doesn’t seem to have the same ring of authenticity.

In addition to the “Kahlúa movement”, they’re holding a “Delicioso Night In” sweepstakes. Apparently, all you need to do is invite a few friends to your house once a month. But the sweepstakes just seems like a cheap way of collecting contact info from consumers – note the lack of privacy policy in the registration form. Consumers beware: your prize for entering the sweepstakes will most likely be A LOT of spam and not much else.

My favorite part of the sweepstakes rules: “In the event that the Aarón Sánchez dinner portion of the prize is not available, cancelled or postponed due to circumstances beyond Sponsor's control, that portion of the prize will not be awarded and no additional compensation will be provided.” Let’s hope that Sánchez feels like entertaining strangers when that “portion of the prize” is awarded.

To summarize: Kahlúa® gets personal contact information from thousands of unsuspecting consumers (which they can later remarket to or sell to a third party) and Chef Aarón Sánchez gets some press - all for a fraction of the cost of other marketing techniques.

In my meager opinion, this is an exploitation of Mexican culture and a cheap tactic to collect personal information from consumers and spam them at a later date.

Chef Paula Deen’s Housekeeper Caught with Her Hand in the Cookie Jar

Paula Deen’s former house keeper pleaded guilty to charges of theft on Monday, December 20, 2010 for stealing $100,000 worth of men’s and women’s jewelry from the Food Network star’s home in Wilmington Island, GA.

Charged with theft on May 5th, 2010, for attempting to pawn Paula Deen’s $18,000 earrings,
Mary Alice White will now be spending the next 18 months in prison, followed by 6 years on probation.

White was considered “part of the family” by Paula Deen and her husband, Michael Groover, during her nine-month employment. Way to pay back the Queen of Cuisine for her kindness…

Happy Holidays, y’all!

Chef Juan-Carlos Cruz Faces a Nine-Year Sentence

Chef Juan-Carlos Cruz received a nine-year sentence today for plotting the murder of his wife, Jennifer Campbell. As we previously reported, the former Food Network celebrity chef tried to solicit two homeless men to murder his high-school sweetheart, Jennifer Campbell, an attorney. Carlos, 48, was arrested in May and pleaded no-contest to the charges in October.

Carlos offered the two men $500 to commit the crime. However, the men reported the crime to authorities instead. In a videotaped sting operation, Santa Monica Police captured Cruz in the act of arranging his wife’s murder with the two men, which included driving one to his Westwood Condo and showing him how to gain access to the secure building.

The motive for the grisly murder plot has yet to be released publicly, but something tells me it has to do with the following:

- Money
- Ego
- Stupidity

Not necessarily in that order. Have fun in Jail JC!

Food Porn Goes South

Do any of you struggle with a certain addiction? Just the thought of it makes your mouth water? Yes, we’re talking about… “The Food Network”.

This season’s finale of South Park, “Crème Fraiche,” was a ridiculous and sexual-innuendo-filled take on the dynamics of a family trying to cope with a father’s lust for gourmet food. His obsession with the Food Network causes problems in the home and his passion for cooking turns into a longing to be a celebrity chef. Cartman does a very entertaining impersonation of Gordon Ramsay. And Bobby Flay, Jamie Oliver, Mario Batali, Paula Dean, and Giada De Laurentiis make appearances in the “Hell’s Kitchen Nightmares Iron Top Chef Cafeteria Throw Down Ultimate Cook-off Challenge.”

Food Network is taking over mainstream media and making a big impact on how we cook and eat. That’s why we foodies can really relate to this episode. The celebrity chef appearances are a blast, but just a warning: the episode is overflowing with blatant sexual references. If you’re not a prude and you do love food check out the latest episode of South Park.

Giada "Squashes" Over-Cooked John Mayer Rumors

Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis was rudely accused by iniquitous tabloid Star Magazine of cheating on her loving husband of seven years, Anthropologie fashion designer Todd Thompson, with musician John Mayer.

The Italian beauty has enough on her plate as it is, including mourning the loss of her grandfather, Dino De Laurentiis, without having to deal with ugly accusations of adultery. Giada and Thompson have a romance that has spanned over 20 years and share a young daughter, Jade Marie. She also stars in her own cooking show, “Giada at Home”, plays mentor to contestants on “The Next Food Network Star”, and is a culinary contributor on the "TODAY" Show. This is not a woman who has time to cheat and let alone with the constant-attention-seeking John Mayer.

While both De Laurentiis and Mayer denied any claims of an affair, we have to wonder if one of them did leak the story in order to cause a much-missed media frenzy. It wouldn't be the first time…

Giada’s rep released a statement to US Magazing clearly denying any connection between the food star and the musician: "When the Star reporter approached Giada De Laurentiis on Sunday, while she was co-hosting a children's cancer fundraiser, Giada responded unequivocally that she did not see John Mayer when she was in New York for the Food and Wine Festival. Furthermore, contrary to the claims of an anonymous “source,” at no time did Giada step foot in the Gansevoort Hotel. Giada indeed met John Mayer briefly at a charity event in 2007 but has not seen him since. To be clear, they are not friends and cannot even go so far as to call John Mayer an acquaintance. There is not a sliver of truth to Star magazine's story. It is unfortunate Star would publish these malicious untruths without reporting the fact that Giada was with her husband Todd that weekend in New York, along with their family and friends. Giada De Laurentiis and her family deserve an apology and we demand an immediate retraction.”

I have to agree. It’s pathetic what a cheesy tabloid will come up with to generate viewership.

Taken off Cruz Control

According to sources, Chef Juan-Carlos Cruz is all about creating "job opportunities" for the homeless!

On May 13th, Cruz was arrested for paying three homeless men to take the life of his wife, Jennifer Campbell. Fortunately, she wasn't harmed, but Cruz is now pleading “no contest” to the charges against him and facing up to 9 years in the state pen. Since he submitted his guilty plea before the trial began, Cruz’s motives and details of this grisly murder plot have yet to be made public. I'm sure we're all wondering what this jackass trying to hide...

Rumor is that Cruz paid the men $1000 in cut hundreds to take out his wife. After a “throat slitting” plot was interrupted (by loitering charges) the homeless men informed authorities of the murder conspiracy before the grisly plan was executed. Cruz and the three men were then secretly observed by the police as he walked them through the ins and outs of breaking into his house.

The chef once starred in two shows on the Food Network and was known for helping people "lose weight without losing the taste". His new "show" about trying to "lose a wife without losing freedom" doesn’t seem to be working out for him.

One of the homeless men, known as “Little Dave”, told media that Cruz needed "dirty deeds done dirt cheap." This shady situation is even more surprising because only four years ago he was giving his wife public praise in his “Calorie Countdown cookbook” acknowledging her by writing, “First and foremost, I thank my beautiful wife for her belief in me and her encouragement.”

Juan-Carlos Cruz and Jennifer Campbell were high school sweethearts, but it’s rumored she was having trouble getting pregnant. 20 years of trying to conceive had left them both tired and depressed. Could fertility problems have been his rational for a murder plot? What other secrets could have driven this clean cut Catholic to such psychotic extremes?
