Top Chef All Stars: One Chef Down, Two Chefs to the Finale

Morimoto, Michelle Bernstein, Wolfgang Puck & Padma Lakshmi
Episode 15 of Top Chef All Stars comes to a close and I feel like I just stepped of a roller coaster ride. But at least this ride was enjoyable. It was fantastic to see Carla Hall again – I didn’t see that coming. And how great was it to have Wolfgang Puck, Michelle Bernstein and Masaharu Morimoto as guest judges?? With the last few Top Chef episodes being such a bust, I wasn’t too sure what to expect this week, but they really didn’t disappoint (too much).

Ok – now I get to vent. Is it completely rude for me to say that I’d like to grab a couple of staplers and go double-time on Mike Isabella’s mouth? It can’t be denied that he’s really stepped up and created some amazing dishes, but his incessant over-confident mean-spirited chattering and his underhanded tactics far outweigh any of the positive aspects of his personality. Couldn’t the Top Chef producers have cut out half of his rude rambling clips?
Richard Blais vs. Mike Isabella

While it would have been wonderful to see Antonia Lafaso make it to the (final) finale, her dishes just didn’t pull through. Mike Izzy won his spot in the Top Chef All Stars finale fair and square, but I really wish he wasn’t so damned unlikeable!

So now that it’s down to Richard Blais and Mike Isabella, who do you think will take home the “Top Chef” title?

I’m rooting for Richard, but I think it could be very likely that Mike Izzy takes the win…

Top Chef All Stars Episode 12 Recap: Give Me Your Huddled Masses!

Top Chefs Richard, Carla, Mike Isabella, Tiffany & Antonia
Tonight’s Top Chef All Stars Episode 12 left me rather perplexed – were you? I hate endings that leave you hanging – especially ones that aren’t rewarding, but really just obvious tactics used to drag out a story line that could have been far more interesting had the story just gone direct. But I digress… Here’s the recap for Top Chef All Stars Episode 12: Give Me Your Huddled Masses!

Opening Scene: Richard Blais wasn’t prepared to see Dale Talde go home and he can’t celebrate his elimination win. And once again, Tiffany Derry is surprised she didn’t have to pack her knives (I’m rooting for you Tif!).

The chefs head to their “home bar” and everyone drowns their Dale-loss sorrows in drinks – except for Antonia Lafaso, who calls her daughter for a pick-me-up – then the top chefs drink to their next challenge (reluctantly). Mike Isabella: is that remorse I see on your cheating face?

The chefs are making breakfast and wondering what’s in store. Then…  Antonia says: “Is Padma coming in here?”

Suddenly Padma Lakshmi walks into the Top Chef’s apartment (welcome and get out) and  tells the remaining chefs that they should be proud to have beaten the 13 eliminated chefs (we know this is because of luck and "producer say" – less because of talent).

The chefs will be heading to Ellis Island for their Quickfire and Elimination challenges.

The Quickfire Challenge:
The chefs have to cook something with the ingredients in the boat snack bar before the boat docks on Ellis Island! There's no clock so they have no idea how much time they have and all they have to work with is “snack food”.

This challenge is terrible. It has nothing to do with "real" cooking. But here are the top chef dishes:
  • Richard Blais whips up a Hot Dog & Beef Jerky Sandwich with Jalapeno, Pork Rind, Lettuce and Apple.
  • Tiffany Derry whips up a Nachos dish with Lettuce, Cheese, Tomato, Jalapeno, Banana Pepper and Sour Cream. Then she tops it off with a Candied Mangos and Pineapples Popcorn. Love you, girl!
  • Mike Isabella whips up Bread Soup with Cheddar Cheese, Sour Cream, Green Chili and Pork Rinds.
  • Carla Hall whips up Orange and Papaya Salad with Carrot and Rosemary Juice.
  • Antonia Lafaso whips up Grilled Cheese with Apples and Raisin Bread.

Mike Isabella says he wouldn’t serve his dish to his cat. Of course, Mikey. It was a crap-food competition. Whatever you made isn’t worth serving. You’re being judged on what sucks less.

At the bottom: All of them – it was a shitty challenge. Tiffany, Mike and Richard
Big fat Quickfire near-misses: Antonia
On the top (for five minutes): Carla Hall! Carla Hall wins the crap-shoot!

Richard complains. Richard, you can’t be bitter towards the winner of a snack challenge. In the end, all of the food tastes like crap (their crap tasted better than your crap).

The Elimination Challenge:
The chefs are reunited with their families (this is sweet). But they have to cook up dishes that relate to their heritages. Really not crazy about this episode. It almost seems as if they picked the “TOP CHEF” winners based on nationalities, instead of their skills. What would have happened if the top 5 were Richard, Marcel, Fabio, Spike and Casey?

How many of our forefathers skipped the Ellis Island bandwagon? I’m kinda thinking this challenge is full of dog poop - but at least the chefs are cooking "real" food.
  • Mike makes Potato Gnocchi with Braised Pork Shank Ragu and Burrata Cheese.
  • Antonia makes Braised Veal, Rapini Leaf and Fava Bean Risotto.
  • Tiffany makes Braised Short Rib with Mustard Greens, Grilled Okra and Oxtail Marmalade.
  • Richard makes Short Ribs, Potatoes, Fried Bone Marrow, Corn Puree and Pickled Glasswort.
  • Carla makes Braised Pork Shoulder, Fried Grits, Corn and Sweet Potato Hash and Cheddar Biscuits.
The Judges Table:
Kinda want to skip all of this. The judges say everyone wins - nobody is sent home.

So happy Tiffany survived and of course “top chefs” Carla Hall, Richard Blais and Antonia Lafaso. Given Mike cooked up a storm and (for this round) didn’t deserve to be sent home, but to not send anyone home was LAME (with capitalizations).

Hate me if you want to – I believe in quality over quanity (I'll make up for it in spades next week).

Top Chef All Stars Episode 12 Preview: Give Me Your Huddled Masses

The remaining chefs: Richard, Carla, Mike, Tiffany, Antonia
This week, on Top Chef All Stars Episode 12: Give Me Your Huddled Masses, only 5 chefs remain on Top Chef: Tiffany Derry, Richard Blais, Antonia Lafaso, Mike Isabella and Carla Hall.

The Quickfire:
  • The chefs are thrown for a loop as they prepare their Quickfire dishes in a snack bar (made up of whatever food they can find) on a boat before it reaches Ellis Island.
  • There’s no kitchen equipment and the chefs have no idea how much time they have to prepare their snackish dishes.

Carla Hall has trouble cooking her biscuits
The Elimination Challenge:
  • The chefs journey to Ellis Island to whip up dishes based on their family tree.
  • Carla Hall has oven troubles as she tries to whip up biscuits.
  • Antonia Lafaso makes risotto, even though that dish sent Tre Wilcox home. Antonia thinks the payoff is worth the risk.
  • Richard Blaise worries about going home so close to the end.

Top Chef All Stars Episode 11 Sneak Peek: Paired Up

Food Network super star, Paula Deen.
Y’all ready for a little Top Chef preview? The Food Network’s Paula Deen pays a visit to the Top Chefs as guest judge on this week’s Top Chef All Stars episode 11 (Paired Up) and Carla Hall is majorly star struck!

Top Chef Quickfire
This week’s Quickfire has the chefs running around like their tails (asses) are on fire as they whip up dishes aimed to impress Paula Deen. And the prize for this week’s Quickfire is $5,000 (again).
  • Dale Talde says Paula Deen is just so night and day from his flavor spectrum. He works in a Chinese restaurant for Christ’s sake. He whips up raw oysters wrapped in beef and thinks his dish is worth $5,000. Even though he won $30,000 in the last challenge, he wants the cash from this challenge because he’s a greedy American (his words – not mine).
  • Antonia Lafaso says she friends food more than she should – is there a limit? She’s making a fried shrimp salad.
  • Mike Isabella makes Fried Chicken Oysters (yummy).
  • Richard Blais whips out the liquid nitrogen (again) to make fried mayonnaise balls (flavored with coffee and lime). Yes people, the Blais has added a whole new dimension to fatty foods.

Marcel Vigneron "helps" Tiffany Derry cook for the people.
Top Chef Elimination Challenge
Angelo Sosa, Fabio Viviani, Spike Mendelshon, Tre Wilcox, Tiffani Faison and Marcel Vigneron return to assist the remaining chefs in the Elimination Challenge… And Dale Talde could not be more disappointed – McNasty Nancy #1 bitches, bitches, bitches all about Top Chef Kitchen… Can someone staple Dale’s lips together please?
  • The chefs need to prepare 320 orders?
  • The Richard/Fabio and Angelo/Mike Isabella bromances are reignited (sorta).
  • Marcel wears on Tiffany Derry’s last nerve as he tries to help her cook food for the people. Marcel, let the shrimp heads go already! Dale thinks that if anyone can get Marcel in check, it’s Tiffany.
  • Mike Isabella is heckling the other chefs more than usual and grating on Richard’s nerves. Mike is paired with Tiffani Faison and it looks like she may be doing most of the work.
  • Antonia is having a great time cooking with Spike.
Can't wait for this week's episode of Top Chef. It might just make up for last week's departure of fan-fave, Angelo Sosa. I'm still a little teary...

Top Chef All Stars Episode 8 Recap: An Offer They Can't Refuse

Top Chef All Stars Episode 8 (An Offer They Can't Refuse) had all sorts of surprises. the one thing I really did love was that this Top Chef episode focused more on the food and less on the drama. It really made for great reality TV. And here's a recap of this week's Top Chef All Stars:

Some of the chefs feel bad about Marcel’s departure, but Mike Isabella ain’t one of them. He goes on a major Marcel-hating rant. Antonia is annoyed by Mike’s rant and says: “He’s abrasive. He’s annoying. I have a list of people I would like to see go home and he’s at the top of it.” Snottily said, Antonia.

The Quickfire Challenge:
In honor of NYC Fashion Week, Isaac Mizrahi judges the chef’s dishes based on aesthetics only. Angelo says that in addition to cooking, he is just passionate about fashion! That’s great Ange. Padma tells the chefs that she and Isaac Mizrahi will not taste the dishes and that the winner will have immunity in the elimination challenge.
- Carla feels that her past modeling experience gives her an advantage in this quickfire.
- Richard knows Isaac is loves the color black and decides to go with black ice cream.
- Angelo’s inspiration is crocodile skin. He always wanted to be a food designer.
- Fabio’s inspiration is a “beautiful woman walking in the rain trying to don’t get messed up by the water”. We love you Fabio.
- Tre creates a salmon dish because the color of the salmon contrasts well against the white plate.
- Antonia is not cooking anything and making a plate dedicated to Shell Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree”. I love him to, but this is a food competition.
- Dale’s dish is inspired by street art
- Tiffany’s dish is inspired by nature, “purity of the earth”.
- A lot of dishes look like Kindergarten art projects.

Isaac Mizrahi seems to have left his manners at the door when he enters the room. He doesn’t hesitate to be over critical of the chefs’ dishes. Isaac tells Dale that his dish looks like the scraps from another prepared dish (harsh words, but he’s right). Isaac teases Mike Isabella about the raw egg on his plate – it’s hard to tell if he’s insulting Mike or not. Richard scores big with Mr. Mizrahi. Isaac says that Antonia's nuts are too big for her "Giving Tree” – and Richard thinks there’s a Koala on her plate. Angelo's graffiti is misspelled and Isaac compares it to Charles Manson.

Dale, Tre & Angelo were the least favorites.

Fabio, Carla, Richard are the Quickfire Top Chefs and Richard wins immunity with his ice cream dish! Good for you Richie.

Elimination Challenge:
The chefs must prepare a traditional Italian feast at Rao's, a famed New York City Italian restaurant. The guest judges are Frankie Pellegrino (actor and co-owner of Roa’s New York), Frankie Jr. Pellegrino (co-owner of Roa’s Las Vegas) & Dino Gatto (executive chef of Roa’s New York)… And “Goodfellas” and “The Sopranos” actress, Lorraine Bracco! We looove Lorraine! And did I mention that Anthony Bourdain is in attendance? The Italian feast must consist of the three typical Italian courses that are inspired by the Pellegrino family: Antipasti, Primi and Secondi. The chefs are split into 3 teams.

Antipasti: Antonia, Carla, Tiffany
Primi: Tré, Mike, Dale
Secondi: Angelo, Fabio, Richard

Fabio and Mike are just giddy about the judges and the challenge. Tre and Antonia are pretty stoked as well. Tre decides to make risotto. Has risotto ever worked out well on Top Chef? Angelo mixes up his Spanish with his Italian. The chefs run like gray hounds through the grocery store. Mike feels like he’s under extra pressure, since he’s the favorite. I’m assuming what he means is that there is more expected from him because he specializes in Italian food.

At Rao’s, Tom Colicchio, Padma Lakshmi, Frankie No & Company, Lorraine Bracco, and Anthony Bourdain gather around the table. Lorraine Bracco talks about her first visit to Rao’s with Joe Pecci and Ray Liotta.

First up, it’s team Antipasti (Starters):
-     Carla makes Minestrone.
-     Tiffany makes Warm Polenta Terrine and it catches fire
-     Antonia makes Mussels in white wine. I guess she’s decided to play it safe?
-     Frankie No says Carla’s soup is good like Wisconsin soup is good. At least Anthony Bourdain and Lorraine Bracco liked it.
-     Everyone just loves Tiffany’s Polenta.
-     They also like Antonia’s dish. But she doesn’t get as much love as Tiffany.

Next up is team Primi (Pasta):
-     Dale makes Brussels Sprouts & Pancetta. He says “The Dudes are gonna kill it on this next one”.
-     Mike makes a Spicy Calamari & Fresh Rigatoni, but his rigatoni doesn’t cook fast enough and he hopes it’ll cook a bit more in the sauce.
-     Tre makes a Grilled Vegetable Risotto and wants to make sure that each vegetable has its own defined flavor.
-     None of the judges look happy eating Dale’s dish that was best described by Anthony Bourdain: “Some poor bastard in the witness protection program is eating this right now”. Tony made a funny. And Tom says to Lorraine, if your boyfriend cooked this for you, you’d probably leave him. Lorraine responds with: “He’s not getting’ laid tonight!” Now that was funny.
-     Lorraine Bracco says that Tre’s risotto was not what it was supposed to be. Anthony Bourdain thinks the garnish was overkill.
-     Mike’s pasta was not even al denté – it was just plain hard.
-     None of these dishes were done well. Anthony Bourdain wonders how “three culinary professionals fuck up a pasta course”. Yes, Anthony Bourdain said “fuck”.

Secondi (Main Course):
-     Angelo makes a Sautéed Pork Chop
-     Richard makes a Fresh Pancetta Cutlet
-     Fabio makes Chicken Cacciatora with Polenta. Richard compares Fabio’s cooking to magic. Their bromance gives me warm fuzzies.
-     Angelo’s pork chop had too much garnish and was swimming in sauce. But it was still tasty (just not fabulous).
-     They loved Richard’s cutlet. The panko crust was perfect and he showcased the meat, as one should when preparing an Italian dish.
-     Frankie No describes Fabio’s dish as “Old World”, which is a good thing. Anthony Bourdain says “Fabio’s polenta wiped away the stain from the previous course. I feel better about the world now.”

The Elimination
Antonia, Fabio, Carla & Tiffany are called to the judges table first. I’m happy to see Tiffany make it in the top group for a change. And apparently she was too – she sheds a few tears of happiness. Lorraine Bracco boasts of Tiffany’s dish. And apparently, playing it simple worked very well for Antonia – Tom thought her dish was perfect. Anthony tells Fabio that he was in a dark place from the previous course and that Fabio’s dish pulled him back into the light.
Antonia wins the challenge and $XX with her Mussels in white wine. Fabio can’t believe she won with a bowl of steamed mussels with fennel. I’m kind of surprised as well, but maybe this win was to make up for her non-win in Top Chef All Stars episode six?

Top Chef Tre Wilcox
Which chefs were on the bottom?
Mike Isabella, Dale, and Tre are called in next. Mike openly admits his pasta was undercooked and he knew well that his dish sucked. Tom and Anthony grill the losing dish into Mike a bit more. Tom says Dale’s pasta crumbled in his mouth – it didn’t have a tooth to it. Lorraine says Dale’s dish was really bland. Tre thought his risotto was cooked correctly and Tom quickly tells him it wasn’t. Padma and Tom both tell him that his risotto was too firm (it should be creamy and spread out on the plate when it’s served) and Anthony tells Tre that there was too much garnish. Tre looks bummed.

Sadly, Padma tells Tre to pack his knives and go.

Tre looks sad and Mike Isabella looks blown away. Tre leaves with class and promised that all his future risotto dishes will spread from now on. We love you Tre.

On next week’s Top Chef All Stars Episode 9: Jimmy Fallon is a guest judge.

Top Chef All Stars Episode 7: RESTAURANT WARS RECAP!

Top Chef All Star's Marcel
This week on Top Chef All Stars…

Opening: Carla is happy she won the elimination round last week, but bummed to see Tiffani Faison and Jamie Lauren depart. Now there’s only 3 girls left. But she thinks they’re all strong: “Go girl power!” Antonia was nicknamed the “Black Hammer” in her season because every person who worked on a team with her ended up going home. This season is deja vu. Could Antonia be a jinx? Keep reading…

10 chefs remain. Who will survive? And Who will pack their knives and go? (I just love saying that)

This week’s Top Chef Quickfire challenge
- Anthony Bourdain takes the chefs to Le Bernardin : The best seafood restaurant in America
- The chefs have to butcher one cod and one flute to Le Bernardin standards in 10 minutes, two minutes longer than it takes Justo Thomas. At least they gave the chefs a fair shot this time.
- Butchers two fish in clean, perfect, quick portions in 8 minutes

Who is the guest judge?
- Justo Thomas (Justo who?): He wakes up every day and butchers at least 700lbs of fish each morning. It takes 3 chefs to do his job when he’s on vacation. Justo, get a website – or at least a Facebook page. You have no internet presence, Chef Justo Thomas.

Quickfire Happenings

- Fabio cuts his thumb and says “I’m not Jamie, I’ll take it like a man”. Jamie Lauren will never live that episode down, but just for the record, Fabio, Jamie isn’t a man. Are you saying she took it like a woman?
- Tiffany owns a seafood restaurant, but doesn’t typically butcher so quickly. She cuts the fish the wrong way. Woops.
- All the ladies struggled
- Richard used to work at McDonalds as the Filet-o-Fish chef! He sent his first batch of Filet-o-Fish out without the top bun – so avant garde…
Who was on the bottom? Fabio, Carla, Angelo, Antonia, Tre and Tiffany. That’s a lotta bottoms.

Who was on the top? Dale, Marcel, Richard and Mike. These top 4 had 45 minutes to create a dish of made up of leftovers form their butcher job.

Who won? Dale won immunity. He cooked two dishes: Fluke Back and Bacon Dashi.

Top Chef Elimination Challenge:

What is the challenge? Restaurant Wars!!! The chefs are split into 2 teams and must create a “pop up” restaurant that offers a short term menu. The chef’s pop-up restaurant must be a fun, one of a kind experience. And the diners will decide which restaurant wins.

Team 1: Marcel, Angelo, Mike, Antonia, Tiffany
- They name their restaurant “Etch”
- Marcel is leading the team
- Tiffany takes on the front of the house
Team 2: Dale, Richard, Tre, Fabio, Carla
- They name their restaurant "Bodega"
- Dale is leading the team
- Fabio takes on the front of the house

What is the prize? The winning chef will walk away from the elimination challenge with $10,000

Who is the guest judge? Chef Ludo Lefebvre, owner of Ludo Bites 5.0 in Los Angeles, a pop up restaurant.

The actual Elimination Challenge

Bag of Potato Chips with Fried Herbs and Sea Salt
Bodega: Opens up with a bag of chips, Richard asks “What would your redneck cousin do if he won the lottery? He would dip his caviar in ranch”. This is how the unconventional style was thought up.
-     Bodega’s menu: Bag of chips, Bacon egg and cheese, canned tuna, chicken fried sauerkraut, braised pork shoulder, and cheese cake
-     Tom calls it “A Bodega in someone’s fantasy world.”
-     Dale goes postal on the wait staff. Fabio is trying to protect the wait staff from the angry-man (Dale).
-     The team is only nervous because there are no arguments
-     Bodega has that fun “pop-up” feel that a pop-up restaurant is supposed to have.
-     Restaurant Bodega ran like a well-oiled machine after a shaky start
-     Fabio directs the wait staff like a pro and the judges are impressed
-     The diners love it and the judges do too (has that EVER happened in a Restaurant Wars competition??)
-     Anthony Bourdain says, “I’d be very happy to have this restaurant pop up in my neighborhood”
-     Richard isn’t too optimistic, but Fabio is (when is Richard EVER optimistic??)

Etch: Mediterranean food
-     Team Etch decides to go with a Mediterranean theme.
-     Etch’s menu: 6 minute egg, octopus, monk fish, lamb and cauliflower, oxtail
-     Marcel is telling Tiffany how to cook an egg and the process goes all wrong. She has to change the dish, but she is managing the front of the house. Tiffany says “Shoulda just cooked the eggs the way I knew how to freakin’ cook the eggs”
-     Antonia is over-confident because her dishes are full, but the diners don’t like the egg, they feel Antonia’s lamb is under-cooked and they send the plates back
-     Marcel is bitching at Mike and Mike bites back. Go Mike Isabella!
-     The waiters aren’t getting enough direction from Tiffany. Tiffany is being social, but does not know how to work the front of the house beyond socializing.
-     Diners have complaints about the plates and all the food is cold.
-     Marcel's Monk fish is called "Baby Food" by the judges.
-     Dana Cowin from food and wine magazine made an appearance and was not impressed.
-     The boys are arguing and it’s getting worse. Marcel is a rude, mess
-     The dessert presentation is spot-on, but the taste isn’t up to par
-     Antonia becomes realistic and Marcel is blindly optimistic. Antonia says Marcel is on drugs. That could be very likely. We know he’s an alcoholic.

The Elimination
-     Bodega wins Restaurant Wars (Dale, Richard, Tre, Fabio, Carla). The judges loved the potato chips, Fabio’s service was fantastic and Anthony Bourdain said Dale’s Breakfast was “stoner food at its finest”. Compliments all around.
-     Richard wins this episode of Top Chef All Stars and $10,000 for his concepts and techniques that impacted the whole team.
-     That means Etch failed Restaurant Wars (Marcel, Angelo, Mike, Antonia, Tiffany)
-     Etch was least preferred, only 17 out of 76 diners preferred them. But they had no game plan, none of their dishes were up to par, no one liked their dessert and Bourdain said “it was a thumb in the eye”
-     Moreover, the front of the house was a mess, arguments in the back made everything worse, Marcel sucked as a leader. “It was a shit show”. Anthony Bourdain says, “Prison breaks are organized with more efficiency and team work”

Owch.

Marcel is Eliminated from Top Chef All Stars
Who had to pack their knives and go? Marcel

Why? Marcel was a terrible leader who no one respected, he made a dish that tasted like baby food and he made a desert that was all presentation, but a total flop. Marcel says, “I didn’t really make any mistakes per say, besides picking the wrong team”
He says about himself “I’m the most notorious diabolical top chef. I’m a personable likable person”.

Marcel, stop smoking crack and check yourself into rehab. You are seriously clueless, dude.

And let me just add: It probably didn’t help that Marcel was on the same team as Antonia.

Preview for next week
Fabio feels like the Godfather is walking in. The theme screams Italian. We get a glimpse of Fabio struggling a bit too. Don't crack under the pressure!
