Top Chef All Stars Bids Farewell to Jamie Lauren… And Tiffani Faison

Top Chef All Star's Jamie Lauren
While I would love to sound surprised, the opening of Top Chef All Stars episode 6 was a dead giveaway – and it also backed my theory that the only reason Jamie Lauren lasted on Top Chef for as long as she did was to build media buzz and frustrate the hell out of viewers so they could provide them with a “big happy” when she was (finally) told to pack her knives and go.  Great marketing trick guys.

However, the episode as a whole was probably the best of the season. The scene where a very drunk Marcel goes off on Dale is hilarious. It was like watching a really bad Eminem impression. And, being a huge fan of deep sea fishing, watching the chefs make their catches was such a thrill – but even more entertaining was watching Marcel and Fabio’s fishing style. No wonder it took them 2 hours to make their first catch. But most adorable, was the married-couple-like-bromance between Richard and Fabio. It was really touching. ;-)

But I digress. While I’m happy that the remaining episodes are Jamie-free, I was a bit bummed with the lack of suspense/buildup of her demise throughout this episode. The secret was given away within the first minute of the show: this was the first episode where they really showed how annoying everyone thought she was. From a marketing perspective, I would have played up the suspense a bit more. There was all this build up and then just a “bing” instead of a “bang”. Since they spent so much time portraying Jamie as the Top Chef villain, she really should have gone out with a bang – it’s only fair.

And a message from Eric Ripert to Jamie Lauren:
ericripert SPOILER! Dear Jamie: Sorry to see you go. But I gladly offer you a free training at Le Bernardin on how to cook a fish. #topchefallstars

Owch.

Top Chef All Star's Tiffani Faison
And while I wasn’t surprised to see Tiffani Faison depart (she was one of the bottom 4), I have to say I felt a bit bummed. While she never lacked for talent, Tiffani has grown into such a likable person since Top Chef Season 1 and it would have been nice to see her stick around.

On the horizon, Angelo has been killing it, but I think we have a couple dark horses in Dale and Carla. And Antonia is really starting to step up. I’d like to see her win an elimination round – after last night’s episode, she really deserves it.

Top Chef All Stars Recap: Episode 6 "We're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat"

Top Chef All Stars mixed things up this week – and I bet you’ll be very happy with the results…

The show begins with some major Jamie Lauren hating – a few clips recapping last week’s episode and everyone acknowledging what we already know:  Jamie should have been sent home instead of Casey Thompson.

In the next scene, everyone goes to sleep, except Marcel, Tre and Dale. It’s clear that the boys have been drinking and Marcel (drinking strait from a gin bottle) goes off on a gansta-style Dale-hating rant. Marcel and Dale are exchange some not-so-nice words and Dale walks away. Flash to Tre’s monologue: “I’ve definitely noticed over the weeks that… Marcel’s kind of an asshole.”

The chefs are woken up at 4:30am the next morning and in a haze of grogginess stumble into the kitchen only to find it empty, with the exception of a “gone fishing” sign and a note… telling the chefs to meet them in Montauk. Tiffani jumps up and down in excitement. Richard Blaise makes a comment that lets the viewers know that Toyota is sponsoring this episode of Top Chef.

This week’s Quickfire Challenge: There is no Quickfire Challenge!

The Elimination Challenge: The chefs head to Montauk and are split into four teams of 3. They’re given five hours to catch as many fish as they can, which they will cook and serve up to an end-of-summer beach party of 200. And get this:  it's a double elimination!

Two teams per boat, here’s how they were divided:
Boat 1:
Team 1
– Jamie, Tiffani, Antonia
Team 3 – Dale, TrĂ©, Carla
Boat 2:
Team 2 – Angelo, Tiffany, Mike
Team 4 – Marcel, Fabio, Richard

Boat 1: Antonia learns what it’s like to catch a big fish. Jamie likes to cook in a “back to basics” kind of way. Tiffany calls out Jamie as the weakest member. Dale catches a huge fish with all of his strength within the first 5 minutes. Dale hopes his fish will make his dad proud.  Antonia catches the first fish on her team and screams like a 4th grader.

Boat 2: Angelo hates the water. Two hours go by and the chefs haven’t caught a thing. Marcel looks seasick (hungover). Then Fabio and Mike catch the first 2 fish (simultaneously) on their boat and luck seems to spread to everyone else. Tiffany hopes her experience in a seafood restaurant will help her shine. Their trip finishes the way it started: Dale catches a ginormous striped bass that reminds him of Marcel (big head and little awkward body). Fabio, Richard & Marcel decide to cook one dish together. Richard let’s Marcel think he came up with the idea because it’s the best way to manage his ginormous ego.

After the fishing trip the chefs go to a farmer’s market to pick up the rest of their ingredients. Richard and Fabio have a little bromance goin’ and share a cute moment pulling a wagon together. Carla decides to make blue fish lettuce wraps that remind us of the poorly made summer rolls she whipped up last week – too similar?

Back at the chefs’ crash pad, Marcel starts drinking again and Dale and Tre miss their women.

The next day, the chefs head to their makeshift kitchens on the beach and start cooking. Jamie’s incessant complaining drives everyone crazy. Richard regrets agreeing to cooking a single dish with the boys – they should have done two. Angelo, Tiffany and Mike decide to create two dishes. Teams 1 & 3 are making 1 dish per chef. Richard bosses Fabio around a little too much.

The Judges Table
Team 2 (Tiffany, Angelo, Mike) and team 3 (Dale, Tre, Carla) are called to the Judges Table first. The prize is a fabulous trip to Amsterdam! And the winner is... Carla! Everybody do the hootie hoo.

Team 1 (Jamie, Tiffani, Antonia) and team 4 (Marcel, Fabio, Richard) are then sent back to the Judges Table. Marcel, Fabio and Richard get reamed by the judges for only cooking one dish and not doing it well – and Tom Colicchio slaps Richard on the hand for his behavior towards Fabio. The judges tell Antonia that she would have gone to Amsterdam if Jamie and Tiffani hadn’t performed so poorly. Owch…

In the end two chefs are asked to pack their knives… Tiffani, we’ll miss you. Farewell Jamie – you knew this was coming.

Top Chef All Stars – Episode 6: Who’s Ahead, Who’s Behind and Who Will Pack Their Knives in the End

A new episode of Bravo TV’s Top Chef All Stars airs tonight and I can’t imagine who isn’t eager to see which chef will be the next to depart. And while many have been hoping that this will be Jamie Lauren’s last round, I’d like to take a moment to look at season 8 of Top Chef from a more analytical approach – because I’m nerdy like that.

I did a little digging and found a chart in the Top Chef All Stars Wikipedia page that has tracked the performance of the chefs by episode. Wikipedia color-coded each ranking, but it was still difficult to figure out who was ahead and who was falling behind, so I assigned points to each one:

8 pts. = (WIN) The chef won that episode's Elimination Challenge.
7 pts. = (HIGH) The chef was selected as one of the top entries in the Elimination Challenge, but did not win.
1 pt. = (SAFE) The chef won the Quickfire Challenge, which exempted them from participation in the Elimination Challenge.
5 pts. = [IN (+)] The chef won a pair or team challenge but was not chosen as one of the judges' favorites.
4 pts. = [IN] The chef neither won nor lost that week's Elimination Challenge. They also were not up to be eliminated.
3 pts. = [IN (-)] The chef lost a pair or team challenge but was not selected as one of the judges' least favorites.
2 pts. = (LOW) The chef was selected as one of the bottom entries in the Elimination Challenge, but was not eliminated.
1 pt. = (OUT) The chef lost that week's Elimination Challenge and was out of the competition.

And after calculating the score, here is the actual ranking of the remaining chefs (from top to bottom):

Top Chef Standings
Angelo = 35
Richard = 30
Dale T. = 29
Fabio = 25
Carla = 23
Marcel = 23
Antonia = 22
Mike = 22
Jamie = 20
Tiffani = 19
Tiffany = 19
Tre = 19

I was shocked to find that Angelo had that much of a lead over everyone else. I was sure Richard would have been in first place. And while it appears that Jamie is ahead of Tiffani, Tiffany and Tre, that’s only because she hid behind a table in episode 4 to avoid competing. If she had competed in episode 4, she would have been up for elimination (minus 1 point) and probably sent home.

In tomorrow night’s Top Chef All Stars episode, "We're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat", the chefs will head to the beach to catch and cook a fish dish for an end-of-summer beach party – and I would be surprised if this isn’t the episode that sends Jamie Lauren home with knives packed.

It’s not that I don’t think Chef Jamie capable of cooking a good fish, but fishing can be a high-pressure sport and we all know that she’s usually the first to crumble in high-stress situations. That said, Jamie is also a most amazing escape artist and could find a way to avoid the elimination round all together by:

1. Having someone do her work for her (like Antonia did in the last episode)
2. Hiding in the boat cabin bathroom (she hid behind a table in episode 4)
3. “Accidentally” falling overboard to escape competing all together (just like her 2-stich knife-incident in episode 2).

Either way, I’m not sure I can confidently predict Jamie’s departure tomorrow. Can you?

Is Bravo TV's Top Chef the Next "Hell’s Kitchen"?

Last night’s episode of Top Chef All Stars just isn’t sitting right. In fact, the last 3 seasons have seemed to be losing the Top Chef magic. As a die-hard foodie, I am mesmerized by the culinary world and the abilities of great chefs. And the reason I fell in love with Top Chef was because it showcased the culinary arts in a way that no other reality show has ever done.

But the episode I watched last night made me think I was watching Hell’s Kitchen instead (a show that I dropped from my roster after the second season for its tacky drama and lack of focus on the culinary arts).

The Quick Fire Challenge:I was elated to see Tom Colicchio take the floor and show off his supreme cooking skills. He was absolutely remarkable. But there are a few questions that keep running through my mind:
- How much notice did Colicchio have about this specific task before he stepped up? Minutes? Hours? Days? Weeks? If you look at this from the legal perspective, chances are that Bravo had to put a special agreement in place with Colicchio weeks or months before this episode was filmed. After all, he joined Top Chef to judge the competition – not to compete in it.
- But let’s say Tom had just an hour’s notice before heading into the kitchen and whipping up his dish. Did he already know what ingredients to use? How did he know those ingredients would be there?
- How can the chef’s dishes be compared fairly to Colicchio’s, when they had to fight with each other over ingredients and only had a couple of minutes planning time?

Regardless, much of the media has really slammed all of the chefs for their performance, but some have been asking the same questions I have:
- Is it fair to expect any chef to cook an amazing dish in less than ten minutes with only a couple of minutes to prepare?
- How does a challenge like this prove that someone is a top chef?

The Elimination Challenge:I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: There was nothing fair about expecting a bunch of Americanized chefs to take over a Dim Sum restaurant in Chinatown during the lunch rush and cook Chinese Dim Sum. Thai, Vietnamese, even Japanese food would have been more reasonable. At least the preparations of those cuisines have a little in common with American, Italian, etc. Chinese Dim Sum is one of the few cuisines that I honestly think stands alone - it requires a completely different skill set and very different kitchen tools.

Forget the Jamie Lauren drama (even though we’re all tired of seeing her just slip under the radar), but just looking at the quick fire and elimination challenges as a alone, I’m struggling to see how any chef could shine under those conditions unless they had previous experience in a Dim Sum kitchen (which is why Dale T. won – the only chef with Dim Sum kitchen experience).

And if the Top Chef producers are hiking up the drama, I hope they also make time to research their actions. There’s a reason FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen ratings have dropped so significantly over the past few seasons. Copying a dying show just seems a waste when you have such talented judges and chefs to play with.

But if they do continue moving the focus from cooking to drama, I guess we can always replace Top Chef with “The Next Iron Chef”…

Top Chef All Stars: Jamie Lauren survives at the expense of Casey Thompson

I’m convinced: Either the Top Chef All Stars judges are all high on crack or Jamie Lauren is sleeping with one of the producers. How has that girl managed to escape elimination again? We all know she hasn’t made it this far based on talent. And to land at the bottom in both the Quickfire and elimination challenges, but still survive is beyond irritating. Even Jamie was convinced she’d be packing her knives this week.

Instead, they tell fan-favorite and Top Chef Season 3’s runner up, Casey Thompson, to pack her knives and go. The "Jennifer Aniston" of the food world was nixed over poor chicken feet that she didn't even have the chance to complete. Do they have any idea how difficult it is to cook decent chicken feet?

Between the sobbing drama king from Top Chef: Just Desserts and Jamie Lauren’s non-performance, I’m starting to believe that the Top Chef producers believe cheap drama will improve ratings over showcasing the skills of the most talented chefs in America . Every season seems to have a decreasing focus on food and the culinary arts. And all I can say is this:

If I want to watch trashy-cheap reality food TV, I’ll change the channel from Bravo to Fox and watch Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen.

Top Chef All Stars: Dim Sum Lose Sum Episode Recap

Top Chef All Stars was rediculous this week. Tom & Padma challenge the chefs to achieve the impossible and shame them when they fail. But here it is: and VERY detailed recap of Top Chef All Stars: Dim Sum Lose Sum:

The Quick Fire Challengeo Head judge, Chef Tom Colicchio enters the competition challenges the chefs to create a winning dish in less time than it took Colicchio to create his:
o Everyone looks either terrified or stupefied. Angelo looks like he’s passing gas.
o Tom shows off his flawless cookin’ skillz, showing more speed, efficiency and organization than all of the Top Chefs combined. Tom Colicchio’s stock has probably doubled since the airing of this episode.
o Tom finishes his dish (Black Sea bass w/clams, tomato & zucchini) in 8 minutes and 37 seconds.
o Padma makes it clear that serving raw fish won’t cut it.
o The Prize: Immunity… AND a Toyota Prius!
o Antonia claps, Carla grins, Tiffany sports disbelief, and Richard Blaise has the exact same expression he always has. :-
o Marcel makes another arrogant comment (shocker)
o Padma announces “Your 8 minutes and 37 seconds starts now” and it’s every chef for his/her self.
o Everyone runs to the fridge, while Marcel steals Tom Colicchio’s leftover Black Sea Bass and gets mucho praise from Tre and Colicchio!
o Jamie decides to do pan-roasted clams. Stupid, stupid girl. If you can’t fix chickpeas in 24 hours, what makes you think you can pan roast clams in 8 minutes??
o Some of the chefs (2) weren’t able to plate their dishes in time. Dale T. says, “I have nothing. And it tastes like dodo.”
o Antonia plates Seared Ahi Tuna w/Tarragon and Tomato salad; Richard Blaise plates a Foie Gras w/Aromatics and Port; Tiffani F. plates New England Clam Chowder w/Celery & Cream; Fabio copies Tom Colicchio’s dish and plates Clams, Fish, Zuchini & Tomato Broth; Angelo plate Crudo (raw fish) – won’t bother with a description; Tiffany D. plates a Pan-Seared Bass w/Tomato Relish; Tre plates a Grilled Beef Tenderloin w/Seared Foie Gras (Tre, are you married?); Carla plates Shrimp w/Mango; Dale T. attempts to plate Pad Thai, but fails; Casey plates a Brown-Buttered Spice-Rubbed Fillet w/Tomato Relish; Marcel plates Black Sea Bass w/Dashi Broth (he may have stolen Colicchio’s fish, but at least he didn’t copy Colicchio’s dish); Mike Isabella plates a Branzino; Jamie plates a clam;
o The Bottom 3 Quick Fire Chefs: Dale T., Angelo, and Jamie (shocker)
o The Top 3 Quick Fire Chefs: Mike Isabella, Marcel & Richard
o The winner: Mike Isabella!! [Personal note: Being happy about Mike Izzy’s win shocked me. I found him soo incredibly obnoxious on his season of Top Chef. But he’s actually toned down his behavior on Top Chef All Stars, which makes him pretty lovable.] Yay for Mike Isabella!

Elimination Challenge: The Chefs take on New York City’s China Town!
o The Chefs take over dim sum restaurant, Grand Harmony, and work together as one team to make an assortment of dim sum options to be served continuously to China Town locals over a China Town lunch rush. Why not just have the chefs hunt a real unicorn and cook it seven ways in six hours? That sounds far easier than this challenge.

The chefs divvy up their dishes. Jamie opts to do a scallop dish, because she didn’t learn her lesson in Top Chef Season 5. Fabio is very entertained by this and goes on a “Jamie should stay away from scallops” rant. Mike Isabella chooses to be a leader and takes on the expediting role. Caring Carla and Cool Casey decide to take the floor (pushing the food in carts and taking heat from angry China Town people – I say this because anyone who knows good dim sum would expect this bad food from a bunch of Americans, experienced or not). Dale and Angelo decide to do two dishes a piece and Jamie jumps aboard, which everyone knows is a BAD idea.
The chefs get their drink on; Dale L. misses his girlfriend and baby; Tiffani F. announces her bra size (36DD), Jamie looks hamm-m-m-merrrred, Antonia gets jalapeno in her eye and Tiffani F. tries to use her enormous bra to wipe it away, which wipes the guys from the room instead. Here’s to female bonding.

The chefs go shopping at a Chinese grocery store: Tiffany D. feels confident about the challenge because she spent a month in China; Fabio sees turtles in a fish tank and reminisces about taking his pet turtle for walks on a Chihuahua leash – he thinks turtle soup is mean; Antonia offers to work on Jamie’s long bean dish with her and Jamie, probably seeing this as an opp to push her work on someone else, greatfully accepts (can’t help being a Jamie-hater); Casey buys chicken feet for a fried chicken feet and waffle dish (culinary suicide unless you’re a dim sum chef).

Prep time: The chefs arrive in the kitchen of Grand Harmony Restaurant to discover two major problems:
- There is no grill.
- The temperature of the oven doesn’t go past 300 degrees F.
o During preparation, Jamie’s dumplings aren’t coming out well (shocker), Casey rushes to get her chicken feet dish completed so she can join Carla upstairs at the front of the house – she depends on Antonia to finish her dish. 15 minutes left and the chef’s don’t have their dishes prepared. Mike Isabella runs upstairs to find a full dining room of impatient dim sum customers.

Serving time:o Casey and Carla begin serving
o Susur Lee, proprietor and chef of Shang NYC, is the guest judge.
o First Course: Tiffani F.’s dish is a Chinese Cabbage Salad; Fabio’s dish is Soy Honey Glazed Ribs; Carla’s dish is a Vegetable Summer Roll; Angelo’s dish is a Shrimp & Pork Spring Roll; Marcel’s dish is a Boneless Chicken Wing
o Delay on second course and everyone is wondering where their food is. There is Chaos in the kitchen.
o Second Course: Jamie & Antonia’s dish is Long Beans w/Chinese Sausage; Dale T.’s 2 dishes are Sweet Rice w/Chinese Bacon and Cheung Fun w/XO Shrimp; Tiffany D.’s dish is a Spicy Pork w/Veggies on a Steamed Bun; Tre’s dish is an Orange Ginger Dessert w/Water Chestnuts and Thai Basil;
o The customers are upset with the lack of food and more upset after they taste it. One refers to a dish as tasteless, another calls the food “Caucasian Dim Sum” (shocker).
o Antonia is overwhelmed with her over-commitment. She doesn’t say anything to Casey until it’s too late.
o Tom Colicchio yells at the chefs for lack of service. People are leaving the restaurant. Dale isn’t doing anything to help.
o Third Course: Casey’s dish is Chinese Chicken Feet w/Scallion Pancake; Antonia’s dish is Shrimp Toast; Mike’s dish is Pork & Prawn Steamed Dumplings; Jamie’s dish is Scallop Dumplings.

Judges Table: All of the Chefs are freaking because they know they didn’t perform as well as they could. And the judges decide to switch things up a bit.
o While the Chef’s wait and chat amongst themselves, Antonia takes full blame for Casey’s dish, but wishes someone would have stepped up to help her.
o An angry Padma asks Casey, Jamie, Carla, Tre, and Antonia to join her at the Judges table first – and we know they weren’t the top performers. Jamie tries to talk her way through it, but nobody is buying her bull. And though behind closed doors, Antonia had taken responsibility for Casey’s dish, she stayed mum before the judges. The 5 chefs are sent back.
o Angelo, Fabio, Tiffany and Dale are asked to meet with the judges. Angelo, Fabio, Tiffany and Dale are the Top 4 chefs.
o And the winner is… Chef Dale T.! (shocker). No prize was mentioned.
o Casey, Jamie, Carla, Tre, and Antonia return to the Judges table. They are the bottom 5 and while we think (hope) Jamie Lauren will pack her knives, it’s Chef Casey Thompson who’s sent home!

EVERYONE, including Jamie, expected her to pack her knives. Jamie Lauren survives yet another week and the talented fan-favorite, Chef Casey Thompson got her walking papers. What a let-down.

Top Chef All Star’s Jamie Lauren Cooks Nothing and Evades All

Is anyone else as annoyed with Jamie Lauren as much as I am? She seems to be making a habit of dodging the actual cook-off.

In the second episode of Top Chef All Stars, she cuts her finger and ditches the competition so she can get a couple of stitches – leaving Jen to fend for herself. Wouldn’t a Band-Aid have fixed her boo boo? Maybe it was a bad cut, but we’ve seen others survive far worse and this week her actions leave us convinced that she should pack her knives.

In the fourth episode of Top Chef All Stars, the competition heats up as the chefs are split into two teams (The Orange Team and the Yellow Team) and compete head-to-head on the courts of the U.S. Open. The Yellow team’s strategy was to start with the chef with the worst dish, which everyone agreed was Jamie. Yet she refused because her chick peas hadn’t softened enough – an issue that she was well aware of during the preparation period. And given, Spike Mendelsohn also knew there was an issue with his shrimp and didn’t speak up either, leaving Casey Thompson to voluntarily step up to the plate.

Even as the competition progressed, Jamie not only refused to present her dish, she actually took to hiding behind a table – behavior one would expect from a five-year-old child. And while the chefs were awaiting the elimination round, Jamie pretended to be upset at the missed opportunity to compete. Fortunately, the other chefs caught on to her scheme (albeit a little late) and Richard Blais called her out on her “interesting story”.

In the end, we sadly see Spike pack his knives and go. And though it was a little expected (his shrimp just didn’t make the cut, I can’t help but feel frustrated at watching the better chef depart as Jamie survives yet another episode. Let’s hope she either steps up or walks out soon.

Oh, and Angelo Sosa, we’re watching you too…
