Top Chef All Stars Episode 9 Recap: Falling for Fallon

Top Chef's Richard Blaise makes his magic
Tonight’s episode of Top Chef All Stars (Falling for Fallon) definitely had its ups and downs. It made me laugh. It made me cry. It had all the ingredients for a really good romantic comedy. And now I present you with: The Top Chef All Stars Episode 9 Recap: Falling for Fallon

We start off with a round of cheers for Antonia Lafaso's win and Dale Talde drinks his sorrows away for making his worst dish yet. Fabio Viviani is butt hurt about how Antonia won an Italian food competition with a super simple “French” dish of steamed mussels and fennel. Not sure I can blame him – it didn’t make sense to me – but let it go already! Always good times at the bar...

The Quickfire Challenge:
The chefs need to make a unique fondue.  Fabio Viviani thinks that “you eat it out of a stick”. Really?  And here’s a fun twist: The chefs are judging each other’s dishes – and NOBODY gets immunity. Antonia thinks everyone will lie about their opinions of the dishes. Fabio says he’ll do fine without it anyway. Antonia continues to bitch about not winning money or prizes – at least she won an elimination round.  However, the Quickfire does have a prize: A 3-day trip to Napa Valley!! The chefs have 30 minutes to cook their dish.
-     Mike Isabella say’s fondue is a gay 1970’s thing and OBVIOUSLY he’s never been to one of those parties.
-     Antonia decides to make a smoked salmon fondue and gives herself a pat on the back for having such a unique idea.
-     Richard Blais whips out the nitrogen for his chocolate and banana fondue.
-     Tiffany Derry goes the dessert rout, and I agree! One can never go wrong with chocolate.
-     Fabio goes with a Swiss Alps theme.
-     Dale makes Pho-due.
-     With only 11 minutes left on the clock, the chefs are running around like chickens with their heads cut off.
-     Angelo Sosa deconstruct a beet and goat cheese salad with endive.
-     Mike Isabella goes with Lamb Kabobs.

And the Judging begins…
-     Richard calls his chocolate and banana fondue dangerous. Tiffany think’s Richard’s dish is a party.
-     Tiffany makes an apple fritter fondue. Richard calls Tiffany’s dish “pedestrian”. Mike uses it as an excuse to talk Dirty to Padma as she eats it.
-     Angelo’s goat cheese fondue is finished off with a beet juice shot. Nobody seems ok with the concept.
-     Carla makes a coconut curry fondue.
-     Dale presents his Pho-due with beef and scalds Richard’s mouth.
-     Mike Isabella presents his spiced lamb kabobs with feta cheese fondue.
-     Antonia presents her fondue with crème fraiche and smoked salmon. Everyone seems to like it.
-     Fabio creates a Bellini and  caviar dish with crème fraiche fondue.

And so the voting goes…
-     Richard speaks, but all I hear is “blah blah blah… I’m better than everybody”…
-     The chefs are worried that the voting won’t be kept secret.
-     Dale wants to be like a “New York Times reviewer up in this bitch”
-     Fabio, Tiffany, Mike are on the bottom. Dale had Mike on the bottom; I wonder if they have any beef between them? Mike’s great come back is calling him a Monkey.
-     Antonia, Dale, Angelo are the top 3. Angelo is surprised – he thinks he could have done better. Richard thinks his craft is so amazing and unique that everyone is scared of him – which is why he didn’t make the top 3.
-     And the winner is: Dale. Congrats Daleo!

Top Chef's Fabio Viviani, Antonia, and Jimmy Fallon
The Elimination Challenge:
The chefs make a trip to Rockefeller Center and walk on to the set of “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”. Jimmy Fallon announces a game called Cell Phone Shootout and the Top Chefs are led onto the stage. Fallon tells the chefs that they must take pictures of food quickly flashing by on a screen using a cell phone. Whatever picture they get will be the dish they’ll need to cook for the elimination challenge.
-     Fabio is soo excited to see Jimmy Fallon. Carla is blown away as well.
-     Antonia bitches more.
-     Antonia and Fabio go first. Antonia gets beef tongue and Fabio gets hamburger with French fries. He admits that he’s NEVER cooked a (“booger”) burger. Wow. Really??
-     Angelo gets pulled pork and Richard gets Ramen
-     Dale gets Philly cheese steak and Tiffany gets chicken and dumplings.
-     Mike Isabella gets sausage and peppers and Carla gets chicken pot pie and does a big ‘ol happy dance. Hootie Hoo!

Top Chef's Tiffany peruses the produce
The chefs have 2 hours to shop and are warned that Jimmy hates mushrooms, mayonnaise and eggplant. Jimmy Fallon cringes just at hearing the words. Carla thinks Jimmy will love her chicken pot pie. Antonia announces that she has the biggest crush on him. Dale thinks that soft pretzels will go with his Philly cheese steak. Fabio is going to make his "boogar" like a meatball. Hmm…

Butoni apparently bought in-show ad space because we’re forced to watch 3 minutes of footage of the chefs cooking their dinner and having to choose from 100 varieties of Butoni pasta and then discuss it. HAS IS COME DOWN TO THIS?? Commercials aren’t enough so now they have to turn our TV shows into commercials?? I may have to stop watching television all together... But not tonight.

Dale raves about Angelo’s “Pretty Man” fashion and 5 o’clock shaddow.

Antonia takes lessons from Richard on how to pressure-cook beef tongue. She declares her love freely for him. Dale still seems lost making a cheese steak. Tiffany thinks she’s a good mess. She’s making “Southwestern” chicken and dumplings. Carla is not so convinced she can make her dream dish of chicken pot pie in 2 hours.  Fabio is mixing a cheese sauce for his “Booger”. Dale compares Carla to a chicken with its head cut off and doesn’t think she’ll make it.

Top Chef's Fabio & Antonia are up first
The judges, Jimmy Fallon, and his family are seated at the dining table.

-     Antonia and Fabio are up first. 2 people like Fabio’s burger, but the judges are not thrilled. It wasn’t juicy, it tasted like meatloaf and they found the cheese sauce off-putting. Everyone thought Antonia’s beef tongue “licked” the challenge.
-     Tiffany and Richard are up next. Richard makes Ramen with a soft-boiled duck egg.  Tiffany presents her “Not My Mom’s” chicken and dumplings. They like Richard’s dish, but Jimmy was expecting more. Tiffany’s dumplings don’t get much love. A.D. Miles describes her dish as more of a tortilla soup.
-     And next up is Carla and Dale. Fallon felt like he had been attacked by the Salt Monster after biting into Dale’s cheese steak. Everyone did a happy dance over Carla’s pot pie.
-     Angelo and Mike go next. There is MUCH love for Angelo’s pulled pork sandwich. Steve Higgins would gladly have Angelo pull his pork any day. Mike Isabella’s sausage and peppers are a huge hit as well. Go Mikey!
-     The chefs bring out an ice cream cake for Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy loves his ice cream cake and tells chefs that the winner will get their own cooking segment on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Carla, Angelo and Antonia have the top three dishes. Angelo’s quirky rub was a hit. Everyone raves about the crust at the bottom of Carla’s chicken pot pie – she and Fallon bond over it. Everyone gives Antonia props for her beef tongue and she conveniently doesn’t mention that Richard old her how to prepare it. Shady girl. Carla, Angelo and Antonia sing their beef tongue song.

And the winner is: Carla!! She’ll wins the cooking segment on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon AND a 6-night trip to Tokyo, along with $5000 for airfare. That’s the third trip she’s won!

Fabio, we'll miss you!
And the bottom three are: Tiffany, Fabio and Dale. Tiffany’s dumplings were too thin. Fabio’s burger was too dry. Dale’s dish was too salty. And Padma says:

“Fabio, please pack your knives and go.”

Fabio is going home?? What?? I’m heartbroken. He was so fun and charming. Tiffany is crushed. Fabio promises Jimmy Fallon a “booger” that will make him regret this decision. Everyone is a little heartbroken to see Fabio go. Richard looks as if he’s about to cry.

Next week: Sesame Street comes to Top Chef! Elmo and Cookie Monster make guest appearances. We see the chefs shopping at Target? There is a clip of Anthony Bourdain that shows he’s convinced that the chefs toked up before cooking their dishes.

Top Chef All Stars Episode 9 Sneak Peek: Falling for Fallon

Jimmy Fallon is guest judge on Top Chef
On the 9th episode of Top Chef All Stars (Falling for Fallon), Jimmy Fallon joins the Top Chef cast as guest judge. Last week we saw Antonia Lafaso take home the prize and Tre Wilcox pack his knives.

And while there is definitely a Tre-like void in this episode, could another fan-favorite be packing their knives this week?

Here’s a sneak peak at this week’s episode of Top Chef All Stars episode 9:

-     The Top Chefs are led through NBC Studios and taken on a surprise visit to join actor/comedian, Jimmy Fallon on his TV show, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon
-     All of the chefs are completely baffled – they have no idea what’s going on…

Mike Isabella & Angelo give each other a hi-five
 -     Jimmy Fallon has the cheftestants play a game called “Cell Phone Shoot Out” on his TV show
-     Angelo Sosa wants to show the other chefs that he has diversity, so he creates a deconstructed beet and goat cheese salad with endive
-     Mike Isabella creates lamb kabobs with a feta fondue
-     Antonia Lafaso disses Mike Izzy, stating “If Mikey doesn’t have lamb with Moroccan spice he doesn’t know what to do. Man, that girl likes to talk some trash…
-     It appears that Angelo can’t complete one of his dishes in time and has to throw it out?? Let’s just hope that this is just a Quickfire dish, or we’ll be seeing Angelo pack his knives and go…
-     And last, but not least, Tom Colicchio, Padma Lakshmi and the Top Chefs will be celebrating Jimmy Fallon’s birthday during the Elimination Challenge.

Jimmy Fallon has an All Stars birthday on this week's Top Chef!

Super Bowl Food Statistics: Are You Ready for Some Football?

Super Bowl Party Food
Like your football statistics? Here’s a little something to chew on! Super Bowl Sunday is fast approaching and many are hoping their Super Bowl party scores a touchdown. You know the beer will be flowing and there is no better way to soak up that ale than adding chips and dip and some wings to the mix. And I’m here to tell you, you won’t be alone – however, you may be sorry that I shared. Here are the top Super Bowl Food Statistics:

-     The California Avocado Commission (CAC) projects that 13.2 million pounds or 26 million avocados will be consumed Super Bowl Sunday, mostly in the form of guacamole. That's enough dip to cover the Louisiana Superdome football field from end zone to end zone and approximately 40 inches. Are you ready to get waist deep in guacamole?
-     Approx. 8 million pounds of popcorn will be consumed on Super Bowl Sunday.
-     28 million pounds of potato chips are expected to be consumed.
-     During last year’s football championship game, more than 450 million chicken wings (90 million lbs.) were consumed, according to the Washington, D.C.’s National Chicken Council.
-     It is estimated that more than 49.2 million cases of beer were consumed by Americans during last year’s Super Bowl Sunday.

Are you ready for some football?

Top Chef All Stars Episode 8 Recap: An Offer They Can't Refuse

Top Chef All Stars Episode 8 (An Offer They Can't Refuse) had all sorts of surprises. the one thing I really did love was that this Top Chef episode focused more on the food and less on the drama. It really made for great reality TV. And here's a recap of this week's Top Chef All Stars:

Some of the chefs feel bad about Marcel’s departure, but Mike Isabella ain’t one of them. He goes on a major Marcel-hating rant. Antonia is annoyed by Mike’s rant and says: “He’s abrasive. He’s annoying. I have a list of people I would like to see go home and he’s at the top of it.” Snottily said, Antonia.

The Quickfire Challenge:
In honor of NYC Fashion Week, Isaac Mizrahi judges the chef’s dishes based on aesthetics only. Angelo says that in addition to cooking, he is just passionate about fashion! That’s great Ange. Padma tells the chefs that she and Isaac Mizrahi will not taste the dishes and that the winner will have immunity in the elimination challenge.
- Carla feels that her past modeling experience gives her an advantage in this quickfire.
- Richard knows Isaac is loves the color black and decides to go with black ice cream.
- Angelo’s inspiration is crocodile skin. He always wanted to be a food designer.
- Fabio’s inspiration is a “beautiful woman walking in the rain trying to don’t get messed up by the water”. We love you Fabio.
- Tre creates a salmon dish because the color of the salmon contrasts well against the white plate.
- Antonia is not cooking anything and making a plate dedicated to Shell Silverstein’s “The Giving Tree”. I love him to, but this is a food competition.
- Dale’s dish is inspired by street art
- Tiffany’s dish is inspired by nature, “purity of the earth”.
- A lot of dishes look like Kindergarten art projects.

Isaac Mizrahi seems to have left his manners at the door when he enters the room. He doesn’t hesitate to be over critical of the chefs’ dishes. Isaac tells Dale that his dish looks like the scraps from another prepared dish (harsh words, but he’s right). Isaac teases Mike Isabella about the raw egg on his plate – it’s hard to tell if he’s insulting Mike or not. Richard scores big with Mr. Mizrahi. Isaac says that Antonia's nuts are too big for her "Giving Tree” – and Richard thinks there’s a Koala on her plate. Angelo's graffiti is misspelled and Isaac compares it to Charles Manson.

Dale, Tre & Angelo were the least favorites.

Fabio, Carla, Richard are the Quickfire Top Chefs and Richard wins immunity with his ice cream dish! Good for you Richie.

Elimination Challenge:
The chefs must prepare a traditional Italian feast at Rao's, a famed New York City Italian restaurant. The guest judges are Frankie Pellegrino (actor and co-owner of Roa’s New York), Frankie Jr. Pellegrino (co-owner of Roa’s Las Vegas) & Dino Gatto (executive chef of Roa’s New York)… And “Goodfellas” and “The Sopranos” actress, Lorraine Bracco! We looove Lorraine! And did I mention that Anthony Bourdain is in attendance? The Italian feast must consist of the three typical Italian courses that are inspired by the Pellegrino family: Antipasti, Primi and Secondi. The chefs are split into 3 teams.

Antipasti: Antonia, Carla, Tiffany
Primi: Tré, Mike, Dale
Secondi: Angelo, Fabio, Richard

Fabio and Mike are just giddy about the judges and the challenge. Tre and Antonia are pretty stoked as well. Tre decides to make risotto. Has risotto ever worked out well on Top Chef? Angelo mixes up his Spanish with his Italian. The chefs run like gray hounds through the grocery store. Mike feels like he’s under extra pressure, since he’s the favorite. I’m assuming what he means is that there is more expected from him because he specializes in Italian food.

At Rao’s, Tom Colicchio, Padma Lakshmi, Frankie No & Company, Lorraine Bracco, and Anthony Bourdain gather around the table. Lorraine Bracco talks about her first visit to Rao’s with Joe Pecci and Ray Liotta.

First up, it’s team Antipasti (Starters):
-     Carla makes Minestrone.
-     Tiffany makes Warm Polenta Terrine and it catches fire
-     Antonia makes Mussels in white wine. I guess she’s decided to play it safe?
-     Frankie No says Carla’s soup is good like Wisconsin soup is good. At least Anthony Bourdain and Lorraine Bracco liked it.
-     Everyone just loves Tiffany’s Polenta.
-     They also like Antonia’s dish. But she doesn’t get as much love as Tiffany.

Next up is team Primi (Pasta):
-     Dale makes Brussels Sprouts & Pancetta. He says “The Dudes are gonna kill it on this next one”.
-     Mike makes a Spicy Calamari & Fresh Rigatoni, but his rigatoni doesn’t cook fast enough and he hopes it’ll cook a bit more in the sauce.
-     Tre makes a Grilled Vegetable Risotto and wants to make sure that each vegetable has its own defined flavor.
-     None of the judges look happy eating Dale’s dish that was best described by Anthony Bourdain: “Some poor bastard in the witness protection program is eating this right now”. Tony made a funny. And Tom says to Lorraine, if your boyfriend cooked this for you, you’d probably leave him. Lorraine responds with: “He’s not getting’ laid tonight!” Now that was funny.
-     Lorraine Bracco says that Tre’s risotto was not what it was supposed to be. Anthony Bourdain thinks the garnish was overkill.
-     Mike’s pasta was not even al denté – it was just plain hard.
-     None of these dishes were done well. Anthony Bourdain wonders how “three culinary professionals fuck up a pasta course”. Yes, Anthony Bourdain said “fuck”.

Secondi (Main Course):
-     Angelo makes a Sautéed Pork Chop
-     Richard makes a Fresh Pancetta Cutlet
-     Fabio makes Chicken Cacciatora with Polenta. Richard compares Fabio’s cooking to magic. Their bromance gives me warm fuzzies.
-     Angelo’s pork chop had too much garnish and was swimming in sauce. But it was still tasty (just not fabulous).
-     They loved Richard’s cutlet. The panko crust was perfect and he showcased the meat, as one should when preparing an Italian dish.
-     Frankie No describes Fabio’s dish as “Old World”, which is a good thing. Anthony Bourdain says “Fabio’s polenta wiped away the stain from the previous course. I feel better about the world now.”

The Elimination
Antonia, Fabio, Carla & Tiffany are called to the judges table first. I’m happy to see Tiffany make it in the top group for a change. And apparently she was too – she sheds a few tears of happiness. Lorraine Bracco boasts of Tiffany’s dish. And apparently, playing it simple worked very well for Antonia – Tom thought her dish was perfect. Anthony tells Fabio that he was in a dark place from the previous course and that Fabio’s dish pulled him back into the light.
Antonia wins the challenge and $XX with her Mussels in white wine. Fabio can’t believe she won with a bowl of steamed mussels with fennel. I’m kind of surprised as well, but maybe this win was to make up for her non-win in Top Chef All Stars episode six?

Top Chef Tre Wilcox
Which chefs were on the bottom?
Mike Isabella, Dale, and Tre are called in next. Mike openly admits his pasta was undercooked and he knew well that his dish sucked. Tom and Anthony grill the losing dish into Mike a bit more. Tom says Dale’s pasta crumbled in his mouth – it didn’t have a tooth to it. Lorraine says Dale’s dish was really bland. Tre thought his risotto was cooked correctly and Tom quickly tells him it wasn’t. Padma and Tom both tell him that his risotto was too firm (it should be creamy and spread out on the plate when it’s served) and Anthony tells Tre that there was too much garnish. Tre looks bummed.

Sadly, Padma tells Tre to pack his knives and go.

Tre looks sad and Mike Isabella looks blown away. Tre leaves with class and promised that all his future risotto dishes will spread from now on. We love you Tre.

On next week’s Top Chef All Stars Episode 9: Jimmy Fallon is a guest judge.

Top Chef All Stars Episode 8 Sneak Peak: An Offer They Can't Refuse

The cast of Top Chef All Stars
Top Chef All Stars took a break last week and for all of you that can't wait anymore and just need a taste, here's a sneak peak at next week's episode:

On Top Chef All Stars’ 8th episode, “An Offer They Can't Refuse”, the chefs must tap into their artistic side as they demonstrate plating techniques for designer, Isaac Mizrahi. They will then have to tap into their old-world side when “The Sopranos” star, Lorraine Bracco, asks them to create a traditional three-course Italian dinner.

-     Tre makes risotto and Antonia thinks his dish won’t cut it. He has confidence because he beat Hung Huynh with his risotto dish in Top Chef Season 3.
-     Mike Isabella feels pressure because he’s the “favorite” and he thinks there’s a lot expected of him. He’s making a rustic peasant dish and has to wait ‘til the last minute to cook his pasta which may cause him to be in trouble.
-     Lorraine Bracco reminisces over the time she spent filming “Goodfellas” and the food Martin Scorsese’s mom, Katherine, would cook for them. She emphasizes the importance of the matriarchal presence and how it’s always surrounded around food. She kind of has a point.

I’m going to guess that either Tre or Mike Isabella will be packing their knives, but I really hope I’m wrong. Losing either of them would be such a bummer. Maybe Dale will end up going home instead? One can only hope...
